The Web Design and Development Intern plays an integral role in the development of the College Autism Network’s (CAN) online presence. Working with other members of the Media and Communication team (Graphic Design, Video Production, Social Media, and Public Relations), the Web Design and Development Intern will oversee CAN’s websites. Building upon the visual and structural foundation of the current website, the intern will post new content and ensure effective maintenance of the main CAN website (CollegeAutismNetwork.org). The intern will also lead the design and development of a new website for CAN’s newest initiative, the CanDoCollege project, a guide for student self-advocates loosely modeled after “Humans of New York.”

 RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Use the Divi builder (a drag-and-drop website production tool) to create/revise page templates to be populated with content generated by other members of the College Autism Network team
  • Post new materials to websites as they become available
  • Refine website to minimize page-load time and maximize search engine optimization (SEO)
  • Outline the organization and presentation of written narrative, photojournalism, and short videos
  • Extend the structural framework and visual style from the main CollegeAutismNetwork.org website to produce a distinctive new CanDoCollege site
  • Design the new CanDoCollege website

QUALIFICATIONS (Preferred)

The ideal candidate is creative, well organized, tech savvy, and has an eye for detail.

  • Current undergraduate, graduate student, or recent graduate majoring in graphic design, visual communications, computer programming, web development, or any other related area of study
  • Experience working with WordPress, Divi Builder, CSS or related web development tools
  • Examples of previous website production and/or ongoing maintenance
  • Comfort working with undergraduates, graduate students, faculty members, and administrators
  • Willingness to take independent initiative while fulfilling responsibilities as part of a team
  • Ability to communicate effectively using a variety of tools
  • Flexibility and organization to balance multiple tasks simultaneously

COMPENSATION, CREDIT, and WORK CONDITIONS

This volunteer position may be eligible for internship, independent study, and/or institution-specific (e.g., Garnet & Gold) academic credit. The position requires approximately 10 hours/week, has flexible hours, and can be completed remotely as needed. Initial appointment is for one semester, though we are especially eager to work with interns who foresee potential year-long involvement.
